S1E4 – Meeting my parents.

On a ranch near Ronan, Montana a beautiful view of the Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains by Roger Lipera

What do you do on your summer vacation? Well, that year, 2015, I decided to visit my parents. After traveling for 11 hours by bus, I arrived at their house. I was born in the countryside of a small town. My parents raised dairy cattle and grew corn, tobacco, and other vegetables. Our financial condition was very limited, and I started working in the fields when I was still a child. Being very studious, as soon as I finished high school in my 17s, I started my undergraduate studies in the capital. In addition to being far away, I needed to work to cover my living expenses and needed to save some money for the round-trip ticket if I wanted to see my parents. Therefore, I could see them only once or twice a year.

The wood floors of the ranch creaked with every step anyone took. The smoke exhaled from the wood stove provided a smoky scent to my hair. After a few days had passed, while my mother was milking the cows, I was washing the breakfast dishes. Behold, someone appears at the door of my parents' house! Axe had bought a ticket and showed up by surprise to meet my family. As soon as I saw him, I blushed, because my hair was disheveled, my hands were full of detergent foam, and the house was a bit messy.

I had told my parents about Axe, but I didn't expect him to visit them at that time. In fact, there was only one day that I showed him on Google Maps where my parents' house was, and he managed to find the ranch. Sometime later he told me he got lost in the city in a bus that was going the opposite direction he wanted and ended up taking a cab, which almost cost his kidney. I introduced Axe to my parents, and my father started to test him to see if he was a good person. My mother was watching him, every now and then she would ask Axe some questions to probe about his history. Luckily, they liked him.
