S1E18 – A place to call home

Interiors by Rob Wingate

The eighth month of pregnancy was coming. This was my scenario: my husband was employed, and I was working with the Professor who would become my advisor if I passed the master's admission exam. I got in touch with the woman from the real estate agency I had talked to earlier (S1E14) and begged. “I just need you to help me find a place to live. I am required to leave the student's house and I need to prepare things for the arrival of the baby, which is very close”. The planets really did seem to be lining up. She, very willing to help, informed me that there was an owner who wanted to rent one of his kitchenettes that were close to the University.

She gave me a key so that I could visit the place. It was a house that was divided into 4 kitchenettes. As soon as I opened the door of the first available unit, I was amazed by the sunbathing coming through the living room window, which made the environment very bright. This is what I need! This is the place I want to stay and where my husband, my daughter and I will start off our life together! I thought that kitchenette was amazing. The kitchen and living room were combined in the same environment, in addition to a separate bedroom and bathroom. These 3 rooms were enough for us to live in for some time.

We signed the contract and I started to organize our things for the move. Fortunately, the apartment (kitchenette) already came with a fridge, sink, and bathroom. Little by little, I would buy the things that were missing. With the news of the move, I received donations for Sofia: a bathtub, baby clothes, and toys. A professor donated me a table with 4 chairs, another one donated a mattress, and another one gave me some money to buy a blouse suitable for breastfeeding. I was very happy; everything was getting organized for Serena's arrival!! Every day that passed I felt more and more the need to nest and transform that environment into a home.
